Troll family
July 6th, 2009
So, long ago, before I discovered the cute trendiness of Munnys, I stumbled across the Scandinavian cuteness of Ikea’s “garden gnomes”. They were sweet and ridiculously cheap, so I bought a whole load of them! This is what they look like “naked”: plain old terracotta, with a lovely simple “dropped ice-cream-cone” shape.
The first one I painted was a Harry Potter, the pointy hat thing just seemed rather obvious… Unfortunately, I no longer have him, and stupidly forgot to take a picture before giving him away.
And then, along came my little niece Aino, who has already been mentioned here a couple of times. So for her first Christmas, I painted my 3 remaining “trolls” as her and her parents, Krisu and Milka. Aino was given the good old ladybird treatment, as that seems to have become her animal totem of sorts. Milka, her mum, I painted with the brightly coloured poncho that suits her so well, and plenty of colourful flowers. As for Krisu, he was given funky sandals and a bright yellow t-shirt with “Tosimies”printed across it - that means “a real man” or something similar, in Finnish, and it’s something of a running gag…
Of course, little Elias came along soon after that, but by then, Ikea had stopped making these cute little blighters, so he has yet to get one of his own.

Before I begin talking about this particular project, I had better tell you what a Munny is. Well, actually, to save space and time, I’ll let Wikipedia do it:
just plain boring, so in the end, I decided to make this first Munny of mine a mini hommage to someone who has made me laugh a lot over the last few years, and also happens to be a genuinely lovely chap: Geoff Lloyd. Again, see
The main challenge of this first Munny was working out how to do the hair. after considering a couple of options, I decided to try a combination of a paper maché “scalp”, painted the same flesh colour as the rest of the head, and onto which I sewed strands of unraveled orange wool, to make a “wig” which I then glued to the head. This actually turned out really effective, and worked first time, which I hardly expected!

If the insert has been greased properly, it will then slide out quite easily once you have run a quick knife blade around the sides, leaving you with three rings of cake. Upturn the
Once the cake has cooled, you will have tree rings of cake, and you will need something to stick them together to avoid too much flopping when serving. gently pull the gap between the rings apart and apply mortar with a rounded knife. For this, I had no choice but to use Nutella. Sorry.
